The tourist experiences of Boyacá go beyond contemplating its imposing landscapes, which, although it is one of its most powerful attractions, is only a part of the wonders offered by the plans in Boyacá. One of them is the plan “Miner for a day, treasures and emeralds” in the Tenza Valley, a town two and a half hours from the capital, Tunja, which offers an immersive experience among mines and emeralds. How does it sound?
Miner for a day, ideal for sightseeing in Boyacá
The tour begins with a welcome in the main park of the municipality of Chivor, where you will learn about the history and the natural and cultural richness of this territory. Then you will visit the museum of the precious stone and learn about mining and emerald carving. Then you will visit the emerald mines in 4×4 trucks.
During the tour you will make two stops at strategic points, one to observe the Indigenous Aqueduct and another to observe the different cuts of emerald exploitation, then you can tour the sectors of emerald mining, open pit and then enter the tunnel to tour the work fronts.
This exciting immersion experience is not only limited to seeing and hearing, inside the mines you can do an excavation exercise guided by Don Hugo, a traditional miner, who is also in charge of guiding the tour and explaining step by step the process of emerald extraction.
And as part of the adventure, if you find emeralds, they are for you! You can keep them for yourself, and as if that were not enough, at the end of the tour you have the possibility of receiving a handicrafts workshop to learn how to work emeralds into fashion accessories. Tempting, isn’t it?
Rethinking emerald mining
Terranía Turismo seeks to bring tourists closer to the traditions, the communities and the territory, that is why the plan invites to give value to the work of the people who for years have been dedicated to the extraction of emeralds and little by little, promote it as a characteristic element of the country, as well as the wax palm, the condor, or coffee. Don Hugo, for example, has been working in mines for more than 40 years. Several national media have spoken of his work, but also of his warmth, kindness and knowledge.
If you want to live a different kind of tourism, of immersion, but also of adventure, of history, of getting closer to the territory, we invite you to get to know our portfolio. “Miner for a day, treasures and emeralds” is just one of many adventures we have for you.
